Structured Market
The Energiesprong movement: a major challenge for 21st-century Europe, to deeply renovate its housing stock.
Over 85% of Europe’s 2050 building stock is already built. Europe must therefore meet a dual challenge: drastically reduce its CO₂ emissions and improve the quality of life for millions of citizens. The building sector, responsible for one-third of emissions and nearly 40% of energy consumption, is at the heart of this transformation.
The strategy A Renovation Wave for Europe (link to document) aims to double energy renovation rates and renovate 35 million buildings by 2030, creating comfortable, sustainable housing and green jobs. To achieve this, it is essential to rethink our methods and deploy industrialized, zero-emission renovation solutions on a large scale.
Accelerating renovation for a decarbonized, resilient, and energy-sovereign Europe: we must reach a new milestone.
What is Energiesprong?
Deep energy renovation and new build approach
Today, over 10,000 homes in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy have been renovated or built using the Energiesprong approach, becoming decarbonized, comfortable, affordable, and attractive homes for their occupants.
To learn more:
Energiesprong (Energy Leap) originated in the Netherlands in 2010 as an approach aimed at transforming the renovation market at scale. It involves deep energy renovation and new construction, with the goal of achieving net-zero energy housing that is no longer dependent on fossil fuels.
The approach is based on a market-oriented strategy and the establishment of a dedicated team (Market Development Team, MDT) responsible for developing the tools, networks, and infrastructure necessary to structure and scale the market.
Energiesprong aims to create massive and coordinated demand for standardized and industrialized renovation solutions. It has gradually spread across Europe following a “domino” logic, activating several markets—initially regional and sometimes national (Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy)—despite differing building typologies and climatic contexts. This momentum has enabled the deployment of industrialized renovation solutions on a European scale.
Philosophy of the movement
4 founding principles
Financial Accessibility
Part of the renovation costs are reimbursed through energy bill savings, supported by a long-term performance guarantee.
Quality
Ensuring high-quality renovations through the use of industrialized components and circular or bio-sourced materials.
Efficiency
Reducing renovation times through improved processes and techniques.
Appeal
Developing a product that gains public acceptance.
Energiesprong worldwide
In each country, the Energiesprong approach is led by Market Development Teams (MDTs) supported by national and European public authorities. Their actions are coordinated internationally by the Energiesprong Global Alliance foundation. These teams play a public interest intermediary role, developing shared tools and structuring a favorable framework for the deployment of comprehensive, industrialized, and high-performance renovations.
